Whether you are an artist, manager, lawyer, accountant, music industry executive, producer, songwriter, or music publisher, this course is essential to understanding the music business and what types of deals are being made. The course covers all agreements in the music industry such as record deals and how royalties are paid, publishing deals, merchandising and touring agreements, producer deals, and more. Current legislative issues are also discussed. Attorneys can get 34 hours of MCLE credit, including 1 hour of Legal Ethics.

This link is for current students enrolled in Dina LaPolt's Legal and Practical Aspects of the Recording and Publishing Industries at UCLA Extension in Los Angeles. This music business class is taught by Dina each Winter quarter (January through March) at the UCLA campus one night per week for 12 weeks.
Various types of agreements as well as related topics are analyzed and discussed, including recording agreements (major and independent record deals), distribution agreements, management agreements, producer agreements, publishing agreements, production deals, demo deals, mechanical licenses, songwriter split agreements, and agreements relating to music exploited via the Internet. The class also analyzes and discusses the U.S. Copyright Act as well as various copyright issues and issues pertaining to music in film and television.
